Bouguereau é um exemplo de pintura académica do salão em uma época, quando Cézanne já tinha desenvolvido sua concepção de imagem nova.

Pintura monocromática, distanciada e fria, idealizada e totalmente lisa através de muitas fotos. Segundo se diz, isto tinha muita fantasia !

Quadros com carisma erótico eram bem vindos pelo público. Graças ao padrão antigo, ele era acima de toda a crítica moralizante. Hoje nós estamos sorrindo sobre este tipo de quadros.

Até a época de hoje, esta arte de salão publicamente muito eficiente está procedendo, especialmente com o surgimento do Hiper-realismo (Foto-realismo) nos anos 70 do século XX estão sendo continuadas muitas destas tendências.
